I am so excited to be sharing these adorable handmade felt owl masks!
This past Halloween my son told me he wanted to go Trick or Treating as an Owl.
I thought that was great! It sounded earthy and fun and perfect for fall.I tried to find ideas online but nothing was fitting my imagine. So, I decided what the heck i’ll try and design my own!
I ended up designing my own very rustic pattern, and got to work, tracing cutting, sizing, picking the right colors for felt as well as embroidery thread, figuring out exactly how the mask would stay on for trick or treat and all those other details that come up with a project like this. with lots of trial and error, i finally came up with this!

When coming up with the design, i knew i wanted the mask to be something they could reuse.Another goal I had was to keep it earthy, neutral and whimsical of course!

We loved it so much that i ended up making my daughter a matching mask to fit her smaller face and even designed and made them matching hooded flannel lined cloaks they could use for other dress up fun and keep them warm for trick or treat here in New England. Their costumes also included removable feathered wings to complete the look! (If anyone is interested in more information on how I created the rest of the costume i’d be more than happy to share! please just leave me a comment below.)
Please keep in mind I am a stay at home mom of 2 kids, just having fun making crafts. I am in no way an expert and my only real goal is to make my kids and myself happy, and this did just that!
Also just to go really overboard with this I made their trick or treat candy bags, one was a mouse and the other was a fish (things owls would eat) per my oldests request.
I had a ridiculously fun time making these costumes.
You can make this adorable mask too! I have included my RUSTIC pattern and Directions free for you to download and use below!

Please keep in mind this is my handmade rustic way of creating this project but I think it came out beautifully and fit the bill. The mask also has that not so perfect, handmade charm that I really like and feel my kids seem to be most impressed with,
I would love to hear from anyone who takes the time to view this post and if you chose to make this pattern i’d really love to know how it went for you!
